L' Angelus
Expert musicians, incredible singers and topnotch live entertainers, L'Anglus combines the best of Louisiana's music traditions: cajun fiddle tunes for the dance crowd, saxophone driven swamp-pop and New Orleans influenced R&B. The result is a live show that rolls along with what Michael Doucet of Beausoleil calls "the instrumental energy of a freight train that knows no boundaries." And the band is all from one Louisiana family. Linda Rees got the group going in the mid-90s with her four oldest children when her husband, John Sr., took a job in North Dakota training Tawainese flight students how to fly jet aircraft.Katie picked up the guitar, Paige the bass, Johnny the drums and Steve the fiddle, swamp pop saxophone and harmonica. By 2002, playing as Linda Lou and The Lucky 4, the group had performed at county, state and regional fairs all over the Eastern USA. "We played mostly old country songs and 1950's and 1960's rock and roll songs. Crowd pleasers." Katie says. "But Dad kept telling us that wed eventually get back to our Cajun roots because in Louisiana, music is still used to bring people together."
L'Anglus which now is a dynamic high enrgy trio, features Paige, Steve and Katie still keeps the popular old rock and country tunes in the show. "We find that most of the crowds like to mix it up. They like Hank Williams and they like Brown- Eyed Girl and they like Ramblin Man and they like Orange Blossom Special. And we like to give the audience what they like. You know why? Because if you sing a song that people know, then you have a bond. And once you have the bond then they want you to sing them a song you wrote. "We are trying to write songs that celebrate some of the recurring themes in the lives of our ancestors: love that survives hardship; a faith that embraces the beauty of humanity and Heaven; and a dance beat that keeps us synced to one another, says bass-player Paige. "Those are happy themes and our job is to make the people happy."
